Cozy Up This Chilly Season With a Hot Drink: The Best Cider Recipe

There’s something magical about the chilly season—the crisp air, the crunch of leaves underfoot, and the comforting scent of cinnamon and cloves drifting from the kitchen. One of the best ways to embrace the season is with a steaming mug of homemade hot cider. Whether you’re curled up with a good book or hosting friends and family, this recipe is sure to bring warmth and festive cheer.

Homemade Hot Cider Recipe

Serves: 6–8
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 8 cups apple cider (not apple juice)

  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds (remove seeds)

  • 4 whole cloves

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • 2 star anise (optional)

  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, sliced (or ½ tsp ground ginger)

  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg

  • 2 tbsp brown sugar or maple syrup (optional, adjust to taste)

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot, pour in the apple cider. Add the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, ginger, nutmeg, and sweetener if using.

  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Once it starts to bubble, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for 20–30 minutes. The longer it simmers, the deeper the flavours will be.

  3. Use a fine mesh strainer to remove the solids. Ladle the hot cider into mugs and garnish with a cinnamon stick or a slice of apple or orange, if desired.

  4. Optional: For adults, add a splash of dark rum or bourbon to each mug before serving.

Tips & Tricks

  • Slow cooker method: Combine all ingredients and heat on low for 2–3 hours. Your house will smell amazing.

  • Hosting a crowd? Double or triple the recipe for holiday gatherings. Keep it warm in a slow cooker or insulated dispenser.

  • Upgrade the flavour: Use fresh apple cider from a local orchard if possible—it makes a noticeable difference.

Hot cider is more than just a drink—it’s a fall ritual. Whether you sip it around a campfire, bring a thermos on a hayride, or enjoy it at home in your favourite mug with a cozy blanket, it’s guaranteed to wrap you in the flavours of the season.

Happy sipping, and happy chilly season!
