When some think about bootcut jeans, they think about the wild, wild West. 19th century fashions fit for a cowboy. Although yes, they looked incredible, the specific “Cowboy Cut” jean didn’t come to fruition with the features they have today until the mid 20th century; an innovation that was designed to bridge rodeo functionality with everyday wear.

The Cowboy Cut Jean was invented in 1947, when the Blue Bell Overall Company— owners of Wrangler— tasked Philadelphian tailor Bernard “Rodeo Ben” Lichtenstein with designing the ultimate functioning denim for rodeo riders. After consulting with riders themselves, Lichtenstein came up with the 13MWZ (Men’s Western Zipper) model, featuring durable 13 oz denim, higher pockets, and flat rivets to ensure comfort on horseback for all riders. Now, if you’re wondering why they’re called boot cut… it’s a bit obvious, but they are specifically designed with a straight cut leg, an accommodation that allows for the jean to sit comfortably over cowboy boots, a clean look for the rodeo, and for everyday wear.
What Makes Them Stand Apart:
-
11.25” High Rise: Sit higher on the waist for comfort in the saddle
-
Raw Denim: Known for being rigid and breaking in over time
-
Seven Belt Loops: Provides extra security for belts
The Cowboy Cut Rise To Fame, and Standing The Test of Time:
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, following their innovation, the cowboy cut jeans solidified their place in Western culture, becoming the official jeans of the Pro Rodeo Cowboy Association. Today, cowboy cut jeans are worn both for the rodeo circuit and workwear, and casually in an everyday wardrobe. A timeless staple that is in the closets of almost all ranchers, and those who live the country Western lifestyle, along with many who just adore the cut, making the cowboy cut jean their ride-or-die. They are still prized and well loved for their durability; their long-lasting, heavy duty 100% cotton that some say have lasted over 10 years of heavy duty ranch work.
The classic 13MWZ cut has expanded since its creation, to now include various fits that cater to different body types and style preferences; however, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Although different fits have been created through the years, the bones are good, and the original, high-rise, boot cut design is maintained through all styles of the cowboy cut jean.
